New Years’ Reading

2 Jan

Beverly Lewis, The PartingThis probably isn’t a really “manly” way to kick off the new year.  I suppose a real man would read something with more kick, so I’ve also started W.E.B. Griffin’s The Hunters just to keep my testosterone quotient balanced…

The plight of the Amish breaks my heart.  I love technology, and I make my living working with technology.  However, I highly respect the Amish way of life, because I know how much I enjoy the simple moments that I am privileged to experience.  Sitting on a mountaintop, watching a sunset.  Floating in a 12 foot boat, waiting for fish to bite.  Hiking in the Pisgah National Forest.  You name it, simple moments are great.  Times away from the computer and the freaking cell phone.

However, the Amish  have a terrible problem. Their religious beliefs, as best I can tell, do not allow for salvation.  I’ve not studied in the detail that I would like, but, from reading this book by a highly knowledgeable writer on the Amish, the acceptance of Jesus Christ into one’s heart and life is a very ‘foreign” concept.  Does this mean they are unsaved?  I suppose that Calvinists might believe that it does not, but it is a clear thing that the Amish rely on their lifestyle for their salvation, and they appear to not believe that one can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

I am intrigued by these humble, honest people who appear to have been deceived into thinking they can work their way to salvation.  I pray that many of them will be shown the light of Christ.
