Israel

20 Jul

I just had an epiphany.

I just realized that I am incredibly “like” the Israelites.

God has shown Himself to me in miraculous ways, yet I still doubt.

He has given to me beyond measure, and yet I idolize people and things.

He leads me by the hand, yet I long for an earthly “king”.

He chastizes me lovingly, yet I too often go right back to the same hogtrough that got me into trouble in the first place.

Many of the most powerful lessons in the Old Testament are not theological at all; they are very personal reminders of my own walk behind Christ.

Give It All

12 May

Pastor Dude Dean mentioned tonight that we’re lucky that God doesn’t want all our money.

Disclaimer – I know what he meant.

But I believe that God does want it all.

Everything that we do with money should glorify God.  Everything we do with time should glorify God.  Everything we do with talents should glorify God.

He wants it all.

Not just the stuff relative to the church building.

Chickens for Dummies

1 May

The only correction, in our case, would be to search for “Raising MANY Chickens for DUMMIES”.

Oh, the adventures the Shufords encounter.

Loving People

28 Apr

Regardless of the type of ministry we do, a crucial part of successful ministry is loving the people we are ministering to.

Not just tolerating them, or, even worse, being at odds with them.

Musicians have to connect with their fans.  Pastors and preachers have to connect with their congregation.

If you don’t possess a genuine love and affection for the folks you are ministering to, I daresay you won’t accomplish much at all.

Bad Blogging

23 Apr

This website is titled as “bernardshuford.com”.  My general interpretation of that is that this should be a blog about Bernard Shuford.

The only problem is that there’s a lot more to me than thoughts about theology.  I like my wife, my kids, football, basketball, baseball, Nascar (sometimes), photography, guitars, piano, chess, airplanes, and computers.  Yet, I’m a Christian, so I think a lot about things Christian.  When I write, it nearly always has a Christian theme.

That frustrates me.  I want to blog about other stuff, too, but when I do, nobody cares.  My loyal readers are Christians, and they like stuff about theology, Christianity, the Christian life, etc.

So, I don’t know what to do.

I want my blog to be a community of sorts, but it’s very difficult to maintain a community based on five or six different subjects.  At the same time, I don’t want to have three, four, or five different blogs, because I don’t have enough content about all that other stuff to justify a full blog.  Or, maybe I’m just not committed enough to them.

So…  I’m just thinking.  I don’t know what I’ll do.  I’m just realizing, more and more, that our Christianity should invade everything we are rather than replacing it.

Y’all help me think.
